Tree Identification

What trees are found in Northern California urban landscapes?

What key characteristics distinguish individual species?

What are the generalities and similarities between tree species to help you group them into families?

In this workshop we will introduce approximately 50 trees found on the campus of California State University, Chico. We will talk about the key characteristics of their leaves, bark and reproductive structures (cones or flowers). We will also provide information about the tree biology, pruning and urban forest management.

We will walk around the campus and identify trees, collect specimens, and bring them back to the lab for examination and review. Herbarium specimens will also be available. Worksheets and tree identification resources will also be provided.

International Society of Arborists (ISA) units are available for this workshop (Course Code WE‐17‐388)
